One dead in Scarborough highrise fire on 16th floor Tuesday morning

Update — August 04, 2026: The fire occurred on August 4 at 200 Wellesley Street East in Toronto and was determined to be cooking-related. Firefighters arrived around 10:30 a.m., extinguished the fire, and one person was pronounced deceased at the scene.
One person has died following a two-alarm fire in a 20-storey apartment building in Scarborough on Tuesday, August 4 around 7:39 a.m.
Toronto Fire crews were called to the area of Neilson Road and McLevin Avenue on the 16th floor, where they encountered a working fire inside a residential unit and upgraded the incident to a two-alarm response. Paramedics assessed one patient, who was pronounced dead on scene. No additional injuries have been reported.
Toronto Fire says investigators are working to determine the cause and origin of the blaze. Toronto police have closed McLevin Avenue in both directions between Neilson Road and Hupfield Trail as emergency crews remain on scene. Commuters are being urged to use alternate routes.
This is the second fatal apartment fire in the Greater Toronto Area in recent weeks. As HOC reported in late June, one person died and three others were injured in a North York apartment fire.
