Controversial actor and director Mel Gibson showed up at Rosie's Burgers in The Well's Wellington Market in Scarborough, posing with staff and inspiring a new menu item.
The 70-year-old Gibson has been spotted around Toronto in recent weeks, including courtside at a Scarborough Shooting Stars game and at a Loud Luxury concert. This burger-joint appearance marks the latest in a string of local sightings.
Rosie's Burgers introduced the "Braveheart Burger" in honour of the visit—a classic burger topped with bacon. The restaurant posted a disclaimer with the photos: Gibson was "not held against his will to take these photos."
The celebrity endorsement, however, drew mixed reactions online. Gibson's career has been sidelined by multiple high-profile controversies: a 2006 arrest in which he made antisemitic remarks to a police officer, and audio recordings in 2010 of him screaming racial slurs. The divisive appearance attracted politically and racially charged comments from both sides of the aisle on social media.
