York Regional Police are seeking the drivers of three vehicles seen near the site of a fatal hit-and-run in Vaughan, hoping they may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage.
A 60-year-old woman from Richmond Hill, who worked as a live-in caregiver, was struck on Pine Valley Drive north of Major Mackenzie Drive at 8:30 p.m. on October 6. She had just exited a bus at the northeast corner of the intersection and was walking northbound along a narrow shoulder, carrying a suitcase, when a northbound vehicle hit her and fled the scene.
The woman's body was discovered Tuesday afternoon when a passerby noticed her suitcase on the side of the road. She had not been reported missing. Police pronounced her dead at the scene.
Security camera footage from Pine Valley Drive shows the victim walking northbound, followed minutes later by three vehicles traveling northbound moments apart. Police are asking the drivers of those three vehicles to come forward with any information they may have.
The area has dense foliage and grass, and the victim was found slightly off the roadway, making her difficult to spot from a passing vehicle, according to York police media officer Kevin Nebrija.
Police are appealing to residents in subdivisions north of the collision between Ballantyne and Teston roads to submit dashcam or home security camera footage from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Sunday. They are also asking automobile repair shops to watch for a vehicle with damage consistent with hitting a pedestrian.
Police warned that anyone who conceals, repairs or alters a vehicle to avoid detection may face criminal charges. They urged the driver responsible to seek legal advice and surrender to police.
