An 18-year-old man died after being struck by a train in Toronto's east end Tuesday night, August 26, after he and a woman walked onto active tracks near Greenwood and Danforth avenues.

Police responded to a call at 10:20 p.m. in the Monarch Park area. Toronto police spokesperson Cindy Chung said the pair were walking eastbound along the rail corridor where the GO Lakeshore East line runs. As they walked, two trains approached simultaneously from opposite directions. The man avoided the first train but was struck by the second oncoming train and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The woman, also on the track, sustained no injuries. Police said an investigation is ongoing but no foul play is suspected. The female pedestrian may be fined for trespassing on the tracks.

Metrolinx, which operates the rail line, said the agency is "deeply saddened" by the incident. "These events are always incredibly difficult for everyone involved and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of this individual, and with our employees and first responders that were affected by this event," spokesperson Lyndsay Miller said Wednesday.
