A fire that started on the rear porch of one home at Haddon and Edgely avenues in Scarborough spread rapidly to a neighbouring house Tuesday evening, leaving two homes heavily damaged and six residents displaced.
Toronto Fire responded just after 5:30 p.m. The fire consumed both homes, which are no longer habitable. Four residents were displaced from one home and two from the other. All residents were able to evacuate safely; no injuries were reported.
Both homes had working smoke detectors, and homeowners noticed the blaze right away — factors that Toronto Fire Acting Platoon Chief Steve Primeau highlighted as critical to the successful evacuation. Bullets struck synagogue stained glass windows, nearby vehicles and homes during the gunfire exchange. The Toronto Fire investigative team was expected to attend the scene Wednesday morning to determine the fire's origin.
Scarborough has experienced several major incidents in recent months, including a shooting that damaged multiple homes in July and a fire that heavily damaged the historic Cornell Campbell House storage barn in August.
