Backrooms, the Vancouver-shot horror film released May 29, has become the highest-grossing film ever distributed by Canadian distributor Elevation Pictures.

After this weekend's ticket numbers, the film had earned $14.8 million in Canadian box office sales and a global total of US$301 million. Reports estimate the film will reach around $340 million in worldwide theatrical earnings.

Produced by Vancouver filmmaker Chris Ferguson and directed by 21-year-old American director Kane Parsons, the film was made on a $10 million budget. It has broken into the all-time top 25 highest-grossing horror films list, sitting at No. 21.

The film follows Clark, an aspiring architect now working as a struggling furniture store owner, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who discovers a portal to a terrifying, maze-like dimension. His therapist Mary (Renate Reinsve) and his employees are pulled into the strange world with him. The film has an 87 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Backrooms is also the top-grossing movie for U.S. studio and distributor A24.
