Twenty photographs by Rodney DeCroo, the U.S.-born East Vancouver artist who turned to the camera about five years ago after years of poetry, songs, plays and acting, go up at the Cultch's Historic Theatre on November 3. Many are the streets of Commercial Drive and the Downtown Eastside that the book Night Moves drew from, the same scenes that won the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature this July.
The judges called the verses and images gritty and poignant, and the book was published in 2025 by Anvil Press. The show also carries new work that has not been in a book yet, so anyone who walked those blocks and passed the same corners will see them through DeCroo's lens for the first time.
The opening reception runs November 4 from 6 to 8 pm, and the exhibition stays up in the Cultch Gallery through November 29. DeCroo told Stir last year that starting something new and knowing you're bad at it is what keeps him going. "That turns me on."
