Two local universities are getting their Hollywood moment in the upcoming film The Social Reckoning, a sequel to the three-time Oscar winner The Social Network. Eagle-eyed fans spotted the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University in the official teaser trailer released Wednesday, June 10. The film was shot throughout Metro Vancouver last fall, with stars Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison spotted on sets across the region.

Jeremy Allen White, best known for his acclaimed work on the FX series The Bear as well as in Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, portrays Jeff Horowitz, an investigative technology reporter. Mikey Madison, who won Best Actress at the 2025 Oscars for her work in Anora, stars as Facebook engineer and whistleblower Frances Haugen.

SFU's iconic Academic Quadrangle—a building constructed in the 1960s that has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies filmed in the region—stands in for an office setting in the Aaron Sorkin film. The building can be seen as the viewer gets a good look at Mark Zuckerberg, portrayed by Jeremy Strong. UBC contributes its own recognizable landmark: the Alma Mater Society (AMS) Nest, which officially opened in 2015.

The building appears in the teaser trailer as an operations room for Zuckerberg. The Social Reckoning is described as a companion piece to The Social Network and draws inspiration from the true story of how a Facebook engineer worked with a Wall Street Journal reporter to uncover Facebook's most protected secrets. Production took over a section of English Bay Beach last fall with a Caribbean bar set, complete with a vacation-type atmosphere.

Stars White and Madison were spotted doing their best to stay warm during a spring break scene filmed during Vancouver's chilly November weather. White also recently stopped by what locals call "Vancouver's best oyster bar"—the city's Joe Fortes steak and seafood restaurant—delighting the staff during his time in the city.
