Legendary Vancouver band 54-40 has partnered with two Delta breweries to create Ocean Pearl West Coast Lager, a beer that captures something essential about the band: understated, excellent, and easy to overlook until you really pay attention.

Four Winds and Barnside Brewing collaborated with the band on the release. The result is a West Coast lager that defies the style's reputation for blandness. Where many lagers are forgettable, this one carries a bite and sharpness typically found in pale ales—citrus and pine notes that finish clean and dry.

"It's light and refreshing while also somehow holding a complexity," one taster noted, calling it one of the better beers of the year.

The comparison to the band itself is apt. 54-40 spent decades as one of Canada's most underrated rock acts. Their 1992 song "Ocean Pearl" has barely 100,000 views on YouTube, despite many Canadians who grew up in the nineties convinced it was a massive worldwide hit. The band's quiet excellence, their refusal to chase trends, mirrors this beer: excellent and understated.

Ocean Pearl West Coast Lager is available at Four Winds Brewing and select stores across B.C.

54-40 performs at the Surrey Fusion Festival on July 18.
