Sutton Place marks 40 years with chocolate brunch

Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar revives the legendary chocolate buffet that made the hotel iconic, this weekend only.

The Sutton Place Hotel's chocolate buffet was legendary. Decades ago, it drew diners from across Vancouver: towering cakes, slices, pastries, puddings, a bubbling chocolate fondue fountain for fruit dipping, and a chef station churning out made-to-order crepes that filled the dining room with the scent of fresh desserts. It was an experience that built the hotel's reputation.

Forty years after opening, The Sutton Place is bringing it back—but only for this weekend.

Blvd Kitchen & Oyster Bar at 845 Burrard Street will serve a three-course prix fixe brunch Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7, with two seatings per day (11:30 a.m.–2 p.m.). The experience opens with a spread of seasonal starters like fresh asparagus salad and beef carpaccio. Main courses offer elevated classics: eggs Benedict, shrimp Louie. The finale is a reimagined chocolate buffet stocked with house-made desserts, a chocolate fountain, and signature bonbons created by executive pastry chef Kenta Takahashi, a three-time winner of Canada's Best Pastry Chef award.

The nostalgia is intentional. Blvd's team has reconstructed the buffet's spirit—abundance, indulgence, theatre—while updating the food and plating for contemporary taste. Crepes are still on offer. The chocolate-centric dessert display is still the centerpiece. The sense of occasion is intact.

Pricing: $118 per person, $85 for kids. Reservations are through The Sutton Place Hotel website and likely filling fast. This is a one-weekend revival, not a permanent menu addition, so the window is narrow. If you grew up with the original buffet or just want to experience a piece of Vancouver's hotel dining history before it closes again, now is the moment.
