The FIFA World Cup is taking over Vancouver for the next six weeks, which means almost every news story, social media post and passing conversation is about soccer. For those who'd rather skip the sports ball, here are five things happening in the city this week that have nothing to do with the tournament.

Bard on the Beach: Macbeth Vancouver's beloved Shakespeare festival is bringing the bloody tale of Macbeth to theatre-goers starting Thursday. The show runs through Sept. 18 at various showtimes.

The Queer Beaver singles mixer Head to the Waldorf in East Van for a night of drinks, vibes and community. This is not a nightclub environment — it's a space to connect with fellow LGBTQ+ folks in a welcoming and inclusive setting.

Shadow puppetry workshop Create handmade shadow puppets that explore organic forms, speculative creatures and improvised image-making inspired by Eric Leiser's practice in holography, analogue cinema, sculpture and performance.

Vancouver Dog-a-Thon Dog owners and lovers are invited for a dog fashion show, doggie games, dog photobooth and splash pools, with prizes and ribbons for Best in Show.
