The Hoagie Half is back in Vancouver on September 12, after selling out its debut last year. The event reimagines the half marathon as a relay race where teams of four split the 13.1-mile distance into legs, with each runner handing off to the next teammate at exchange points. But the real draw is the food: each handoff includes sandwiches from some of Vancouver's favourite local restaurants—Say Hey Café, Meat & Bread, Vennie's, and Cream Pony.
"We wanted to create something that feels less like a traditional race and more like a city-wide celebration," said co-founder Oll Farrell. "Whether you're chasing a podium finish or just looking for an unforgettable day with friends, the Hoagie Half brings together incredible local restaurants, running, and community in a way that's completely unique."
The day begins and ends at a central event village featuring DJs, food, drinks, giveaways, and an afterparty once everyone crosses the finish line. Every participant receives a limited-edition Hoagie Half T-shirt, a beverage, and multiple sandwich stops throughout the course—turning the run into a neighbourhood sandwich crawl.
The event is expanding beyond Vancouver for the first time. Edmonton will host its own Hoagie Half on September 19. More than 400 runners and hundreds of spectators are expected across both cities.
Entry is $70 per person. Registration is available online. Whether you're pursuing a personal best or simply looking for permission to eat multiple sandwiches in one day, the Hoagie Half offers a compelling case that relay races deserve more deli meat.
