BC & Alberta Guide Dogs officially opened the Victor and Anna Kern Breeding & Training Centre in Ladner on Friday, June 19, marking a significant milestone for the organization and the first facility of its kind in Western Canada.

The 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art centre will allow the organization to expand its reach beyond the more than 400 Guide and Service Dogs it has graduated in its first 30 years. Those dogs currently serve more than 75 communities across B.C. and Alberta and support more than 220 active teams.

With the new facility, BC & Alberta Guide Dogs can serve more individuals with blindness and low vision, children with autism and their families, and Veterans and First Responders living with Occupational Stress Injury as a result of their professions.

A capital fundraising campaign launched in May 2024, with construction beginning in September 2024 and wrapping up earlier this year. The federal government contributed $2.7 million through the Enabling Accessibility Fund.

Lieutenant Governor of B.C. Wendy Cocchia, who attended the opening, said organizations like BC & Alberta Guide Dogs demonstrate the profound impact of compassion and community.

"Their commitment to excellence ensures that every partnership is built on care, expertise, and dedication. This is truly life-changing work, strengthening communities and creating lasting connections between people and the remarkable dogs who support them."

Delta MP Jill McKnight highlighted the volunteers and staff driving the work.

"From puppy raisers and volunteers to trainers and dedicated staff, the entire BC & Alberta Guide Dogs community exemplifies compassion, commitment, and impact."

The opening ceremony included guest speakers, a ribbon cutting, unveiling of a donor wall, building tours, and demonstrations.
