South Flats—the development between Main and Clark streets on Great Northern Way that started with an awkward name—proved itself worth the skepticism when the official Game Days South Flats watch party opened for Canada's first Men's World Cup match on home soil.

The free watch party sold out completely. The area under a protective canopy was set up with tables, chairs, a large screen, and solid sound system. Multiple food trucks (Japadog, Shameless Buns, among others) and good local beer (Strathcona Beer Company) kept the crowd fueled. Crucially, there were designated areas for kids to play soccer and hang out—something often missing at crowded outdoor events.

Canada drew with Bosnia-Herzegovina in the match, and the packed crowd was intense, living and dying with every corner kick. The front of the venue had comfortable seating for those who arrived early, but the long wooden tables at the back worked for standing spectators willing to crane their necks. The atmosphere was electric without feeling chaotic.

South Flats itself is right next to a SkyTrain station (about to improve with the Broadway extension), sits near Emily Carr's new campus, and has become home to corporate offices for companies like Electronic Arts and trendy spots like Nemesis coffee and Kafka's eatery. The area's cycling infrastructure is among the city's best. What started as a developer's play space has quietly become a legitimately livable neighborhood.

The watch party setup wasn't perfect—seating was uneven, and sightlines from the back could be better. But for a free, massive fan experience on home soil for the first time in a World Cup men's tournament, it delivered. Game Days South Flats resumes this week June 18–21. Reserve tickets online.
