The Shipyards in North Vancouver proved to be one of the best venues in Metro Vancouver to catch World Cup action. The free watch party delivered on scale, logistics, and atmosphere during the England-Croatia match, though organizers could have tweaked a few details.

The plaza opened up vast amounts of square footage in intriguing ways. Multiple food trucks — including Triple O's — lined the grounds, while over 60 vendors sold World Cup merchandise and memorabilia. Mini screens were positioned throughout the space, giving fans multiple sightlines even when the main screen was distant.

The decision to minimize fixed seating proved slightly divisive. While organizers aimed to create an open, flowing plaza, many attendees ended up sitting on the concrete floor as the match progressed. The rock structures at the side became fully covered with people. For families with kids and those wanting a place to lean, a few more tables might have improved comfort without compromising the open feel.

The crowd atmosphere leaned quieter than past World Cup watch parties, even with England's early goal and the match's six-goal total. Some spectators expected louder reactions to scoring moments, though others appreciated the laid-back vibe.

Overall, the Shipyards proved the accessibility and appeal of hosting an event a two-zone SkyTrain ride from downtown, with ample plaza space and an obvious draw for both tourists and locals. The execution impressed — from merchandise selection to food variety to screen placement — even where the atmosphere didn't quite reach peak intensity.
