Maple Ridge school placed in secure mode after weapon report near campus

Thomas Haney Secondary School in Maple Ridge was placed into 'Hold and Secure' status Thursday morning, July 9 following a report of an individual with a weapon in the area.
Maple Ridge RCMP were called around 11:15 a.m. to the area around the school on reports of "an individual with a weapon." When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old youth in possession of an imitation firearm and took him into custody.
A letter from the Maple Ridge School District to parents stated that "the school received a report that a student may have been in possession of a weapon at school. Staff acted on the report immediately, placing the school in a Hold and Secure as the student in question was no longer in the building." The school remained under the protective measure for about 30 minutes until RCMP lifted the warning.
