A man found unresponsive in a stopped vehicle in the middle of a Surrey road early Sunday was arrested after regaining consciousness and attempting to drive away from police.

Surrey Police Service officers responded to 18 Avenue and 138 Street at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, August 2, after reports of a driver slumped over in a car blocking traffic. When officers arrived, they boxed in the vehicle with police cars and approached the lone occupant, who was unresponsive to repeated commands.

According to Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton, officers were concerned the man needed medical attention. As they moved to take him into custody, he regained consciousness and tried to start the vehicle and drive away — an attempt prevented by the surrounding police cars.

Once taken into custody, police seized an unloaded firearm, ammunition, and three knives from the vehicle. The man remains in custody pending charges. Police have not disclosed what specific charges he may face or when he will appear in court, nor have they said whether the man was under the influence or experiencing a medical emergency.
