A man died Friday after fleeing Vancouver police in a rented Polaris Slingshot near Canada Place, triggering an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office.
VPD officers were on foot in the 1000 block of Canada Place at approximately 3 p.m. when they attempted to speak with the man in the three-wheeled vehicle. When he drove off, the vehicle collided head-on with a white Honda SUV less than a block away. The Polaris Slingshot ended on its side.
The man was taken to hospital with critical injuries and pronounced dead. No information has been released about the condition of the Honda driver. The nature of the original police interaction remains under investigation.
The Polaris Slingshot—a three-wheeled open-top vehicle with a two-litre engine—was rented from Vancity Slingshot, a Richmond-based rental company. Lance Thomas-James, who owns the company, confirmed the vehicle was part of their fleet but said his company did not rent it to the man who was driving it.
The IIO, which investigates police-involved incidents resulting in death or serious injury in British Columbia, declined to release further details at this early stage.
