A driver died in a collision in downtown Vancouver on Friday, September 11, around 3 p.m., near the 1000 block of Canada Place, prompting the Vancouver Police Department to notify the Independent Investigations Office.

VPD officers were on foot investigating a fraud when they attempted to speak with a male suspect in a vehicle. The suspect drove away, and the vehicle became involved in a collision less than a block from the initial scene. The driver of the vehicle died at the scene. No one else was injured.

The IIO has assumed conduct of the investigation. Police have not released the identity of the deceased driver, whether the suspect in the vehicle is the same person as the deceased driver, or the cause of the collision. The status of the underlying fraud investigation is also unclear.

The VPD laid charges in conjunction with a fatal collision on June 22, 2023, at the intersection of West Georgia and Burrard streets, indicating a pattern of police involvement in serious vehicle incidents.
