The Fleetwood Islamic Centre in Surrey was vandalized between 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28 and 5 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 with threatening graffiti and raw bacon placed on the building's door handles and near windows.

The threats written on the walls read "Islam is trash" and "get out or die." Video surveillance captured a masked suspect wearing a dark green hoodie with red lettering, red shoes with white soles, and dark cargo pants. The suspect is believed to be driving a small white four-door sedan.

The RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit is investigating whether the incident was hate-crime motivated. Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke issued a statement saying the incident was "deeply offensive and heartbreaking," and that she stands with the Muslim community and the centre's members.

"Attempts to intimidate people because of their faith undermine the sense of safety and belonging that every resident deserves," Locke said.

Worshippers discovered the threats when they arrived for morning prayer over the weekend. Anyone with information on the suspect's identity or dashcam or video footage of the area is asked to contact Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502, file number 26-27049 (SU).
