Surrey police have classified the early morning shooting outside a home in the Newton neighbourhood on August 12 as extortion-related, though investigators say the classification may change depending on how the investigation proceeds.

Police were called to a residence in the 7600-block of 124 Street around 10:34 a.m. on August 12 after the homeowner discovered what they believed to be gunshot damage to an outbuilding on their property. The shooting is believed to have occurred overnight. Upon arrival, officers confirmed the damage was caused by gunfire. There were no reported injuries.

Staff Sergeant Lindsey Houghton of Surrey Police said: "However, that may change depending on how the investigation proceeds."

Police are seeking anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed suspicious activity, has dashcam footage, or lives nearby with CCTV footage. Anyone with information concerning the incident is asked to contact Surrey Police's non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and reference file number 26-85351 (SP).

The extortion-related classification comes as Surrey has recorded a significant number of such incidents this year. As of August 17, the city reported 138 extortions, 22 shots-fired incidents, two arsons, and 74 victims (39 of them repeat victims) in 2026. This pattern reflects an ongoing concern in the region that has prompted multiple police investigations in recent months.
