Ugly Potato Day is returning to the Cloverdale Fairgrounds on Friday, Aug. 8 with a free-produce event that organizers expect will draw upwards of 20,000 people.
The event gives away hundreds of thousands of pounds of rescued produce — fruits and vegetables rejected by grocery stores simply because they look different. A wonky carrot, a blemished apple, a potato that is too small or too big: perfectly good food that would otherwise be tossed, even though there is nothing wrong with it.
Last year, the event gave away 490,000 lbs of produce in a single day. This year, organizers aim to give away even more.
Fruit pick-up will take place in the Agripex, while veggie pick-up will be in the Stetson Bowl. Each person can expect to get about 20 to 30 pounds of produce. Attendees must bring their own bags (2 max.), water, a digital ticket (screenshot your confirmation email as a backup), and no carts or wagons are allowed. Admission is free, but organizers ask attendees to pre-register to help manage volume. Each ticket allows for one adult and one child.
Along with the produce haul, event attendees can expect live music, games, prizes, giveaways, and a special guest speaker.
Ugly Potato Day was started by Tyler Heppell, a fifth-generation farmer, in 2022. The event quickly outgrew the space available on his farm and moved to the Cloverdale Fairgrounds in 2024. Odd Bunch, Canada's fastest-growing produce delivery company that rescues imperfect fruits and vegetables, became the presenting sponsor in 2025.
Free parking is available on-site at the Cloverdale racetrack with entry via 176th Street on both 62nd Avenue and the Fairground's entrance between the curling rink and The Barn. Ugly Potato Day runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 8 at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, located at 17905 62nd Avenue.
