A man was shot by a Burnaby RCMP officer Sunday morning after approaching police with an edged weapon during a response to a disturbance report.
RCMP arrived at a residence on Kingsway Avenue around 10:15 a.m. on October 12. When officers arrived, a man approached them with an edged weapon. One officer discharged a firearm, striking the man. He received emergency aid at the scene and was transported to hospital. No one else was injured.
The B.C. Independent Investigations Office has taken over the investigation. RCMP say they will release no further information while the matter is under IIO review. Another outlet characterized the incident as a possible domestic dispute based on IIO's description.
Police have not released the man's name, his current condition at the hospital, or identified the officer involved. The timeline for the IIO's investigation has not been stated.
This is the second significant police incident Burnaby RCMP has responded to in the area in recent months. In July, RCMP sought witnesses after a sexual assault near Royal Oak SkyTrain Station and made a robbery arrest nine minutes after a business theft on Lougheed.
