Assault and possible hate crime investigation underway in Main Street incident involving turban removal

Vancouver Police are investigating a possible hate crime following a series of violent incidents near Main Street and 2nd Avenue on August 4.

A 44-year-old man was arrested and is in custody pending charges. Around 9 a.m., he was panhandling outside a fast-food restaurant when security guards asked him to leave. The suspect allegedly threw a cup, pushed a security guard, and yelled racist comments about the guard's ethnicity and religion. He then allegedly struck the guard and removed the guard's turban before leaving the area.

Approximately one block away and shortly after, the suspect allegedly approached another victim and demanded money while making threats. The victim complied and handed over cash. The suspect then allegedly struck the victim in the head and demanded additional money. After providing more cash, the victim was able to escape and call police.

Officers quickly located the suspect at a nearby residence and arrested him without incident. Police have recommended charges of assault and robbery.
