Starting this week, more than 40 B.C. landmarks will illuminate in blue throughout September as part of the Canadian Prostate Cancer Foundation's Light Up in Blue campaign, which runs across the country.
Vancouver City Hall, the Burrard Bridge, BC Place, and the Vancouver Convention Centre are among the local sites participating. Other B.C. landmarks include the BC Parliament Buildings in Victoria, the Nanaimo Bastion, and the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. Some will glow for a single day; others for weeks or the full month.
The foundation says one in eight Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and that early detection "changes everything." The colour blue was chosen because it's traditionally associated with boys and men, and it represents "hope, compassion, and unity in the face of the most prevalent cancer in men," according to the campaign.
Participation last year was unprecedented, with over 150 landmarks lit across Canada and more than 300 homes going blue.
