B.C.'s top RCMP commander has been relieved of his duties, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme announced Thursday.
Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald is out as commanding officer of the B.C. RCMP following allegations dating to 2016 and 2018. "These allegations were recently brought to the attention of the RCMP. Investigations are ongoing," Duheme said. "We are treating this matter with the attention and diligence it requires."
The nature of the allegations has not been disclosed. Duheme acknowledged that changes in senior leadership may be concerning for employees and communities, emphasizing that commanding officers play a critical role in delivering policing services.
John Brewer has been appointed as interim deputy commissioner and commanding officer of the B.C. RCMP. Duheme said Brewer has his "full confidence" and is a "respected member of the RCMP's senior leadership team" who is fully aware of B.C.'s policing priorities and needs.
The RCMP said it will not provide further details at this time. An investigation into the allegations against McDonald is ongoing.
