James Butler rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns, leading Vancouver to a 36-24 win over the Edmonton Elks on Saturday, July 4, at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna. It was the Lions' first victory of the season, improving their record to 1-3.
Quarterback Nathan Rourke tossed for 320 yards and a touchdown, while running back Zander Horvath added two touchdowns—one on the ground and one through the air. Sean Whyte kicked three field goals and three extra points for BC.
Edmonton's Cody Fajardo threw for 395 yards and three touchdowns but was intercepted three times. Kaoin Julien-Grant caught two touchdowns for the Elks, Austin Mack added another, and Vincent Blanchard kicked a field goal and extra point.
The Lions have been playing their home games in Kelowna instead of BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, which is hosting the FIFA World Cup. Saturday's game was the second of two "Touchdown Kelowna" matches this summer, with temporary grandstands expanding the Apple Bowl's capacity to approximately 18,500 spectators.
