The B.C. Lions lost more than a game Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton — they lost their starting quarterback to injury.

Nathan Rourke, the league's reigning most outstanding player, suffered a non-throwing shoulder injury on the first drive and did not return as the Lions dropped a 19-17 decision to the Edmonton Elks. Backup Chase Brice replaced Rourke, throwing for 226 yards but also four interceptions as the Lions fell to 1-4.

Edmonton opened scoring just over nine minutes in with a 38-yard field goal by Vincent Blanchard. The Lions responded with a touchdown drive capped by Keon Hatcher's one-yard reception, with Zander Horvath powering in for the score to give B.C. a 7-3 lead with 2:57 left in the first quarter.

The Elks took control before halftime. After Brice threw his first interception, Edmonton drove down to the B.C. five, and T.J. Luther caught a touchdown pass from Cody Fajardo. Blanchard's convert gave Edmonton a 10-7 lead, then added field goals of 26 yards twice to make it 16-7 at the half.

Edmonton extended the lead to 19-7 with a 16-yard Blanchard field goal early in the third quarter. The Lions pieced together a solid drive to open the fourth, with Brice finding Hatcher for an 11-yard touchdown to pull B.C. within 19-14. A 19-yard field goal made it 19-17, but Edmonton's defence held firm in the final moments to secure the win. Fajardo finished with 282 yards and a touchdown for the Elks (5-1).
