Colombia and Switzerland will meet July 8 at BC Place for Vancouver's seventh and final FIFA World Cup match, after Colombia beat Ghana 1-0 on Friday to advance to the Round of 16.
Judging by FIFA world rankings, this is the most marquee matchup Vancouver has hosted in the tournament. Colombia sits 11th globally, while Switzerland ranks 15th. The winner will face the victor of Argentina-Egypt in the quarter-finals.
For Colombia, this is their first Round of 16 appearance since 2018. They last reached the quarter-finals in 2014. Switzerland, meanwhile, has made the Round of 16 in four consecutive tournaments, but hasn't advanced to the quarter-finals since 1954.
Vancouver has sold out all six matches it has hosted. Colombia has a large fan base in the city, so expect to see yellow jerseys throughout Downtown Vancouver over the coming days. Switzerland will be playing its third game at BC Place — the Swiss booked their Round of 16 ticket with a 2-0 win over Algeria in Vancouver on June 27.
