With Switzerland's 1-0 penalty victory over Colombia on July 7, BC Place concluded its run as a FIFA World Cup venue, ending seven games that drew international praise for Vancouver's hospitality and organization.
Swiss defender Manuel Akanji said he enjoyed the city so much his family stayed throughout the tournament. "I like the city," he said. "My family stayed here the whole time. I really enjoyed Vancouver," adding he may return in the future. Teammate and captain Granit Xhaka praised the people. "I think the people are very kind," he said. "The hotel is amazing. We have the stuff, what we need."
Belgian star Kevin De Bruyne, who has played in four World Cups across Europe and England, complimented BC Place itself. "I've been here a short stay, but I have to say it was a really nice stadium to play in," he said. "It feels like a real football stadium for me... you have all the NFL feeling, so I think for us it's really nice. You felt it on the pitch, it's a bit different, so it was a pleasure."
New Zealand's Michael Boxall, who lived in Vancouver during his time with the Whitecaps, called it "one of the more beautiful cities in North America." Fellow Kiwi Tim Payne enjoyed bringing his young family, visiting Stanley Park and the aquarium with his son.
Volunteers and spectators from across BC also embraced the experience. Colombian fans from Vancouver Island who attended Tuesday's match returned on evening ferries "feeling a bit melancholy" after their team's loss, but many described the event as well-organized and inspiring. "B.C. and Vancouver were great hosts and I have been impressed by the safety surrounding the event and all the volunteers," said Sarah Yager of Victoria.
Watch parties are continuing across the region through the July 19 championship at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
