Canada's biggest World Cup moment arrives Wednesday, June 24, at noon when the Men's National Team takes on Switzerland at BC Place in a match that could send them through to the knockout stage.
If Canada wins or ties, they'll top their group and secure a home advantage in the next round — and likely face a weaker opponent than the Swiss, who are the biggest challenge Canada has faced so far in the tournament.
The city is bracing for crowd energy not seen in years. BC Place will be the epicentre, but massive watch parties are set up across the region.
The official FIFA Fan Festival at Hastings Park features a big screen under the amphitheatre with both free standing-room and ticketed seating — though organizers warn both locations will draw packed crowds. Arrive early if you want prime positioning; if Canada advances, crowds near the screens can get rowdy.
Canada House, the free official watch party at the Shipyards in North Vancouver, will also draw huge numbers of Canadians. Both waterfront sites are expected to be packed.
Granville Island has set up its own big screen with seating for fans. Jack Poole Plaza, where TSN has set up its broadcast stage, will also show the game. Throughout the region, local libraries and civic plazas are hosting watch parties, and downtown pubs have ticketed times available for fans.
Game time: noon Wednesday, June 24. Most watch parties are free; some bars will charge cover. Arrive well before kickoff if you want a good spot.
