Environment Canada issued rainfall warnings Monday, Sept. 28 for the Lower Mainland, Howe Sound, and Vancouver Island as a frontal system moves in from the North Coast.
Heavy rain should begin around 4 p.m. Monday and continue into Tuesday. The widespread average is 50 mm, though areas with topographic enhancement—Burnaby Mountain, the North Shore mountains—could receive up to 70 mm. MetroVancouver, Coquitlam, and the North Shore may see up to 70 mm as well.
Environment Canada meteorologist Jennifer Kowal described the system as a "very wet Pacific System." Water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas is likely, with potential for significant impact on rush-hour traffic. Strong, gusty southeasterly winds are forecast overnight. Environment Canada advised watching for washouts near rivers and creeks.
Momentary clearing is expected Wednesday, Sept. 30, followed by a weaker system moving in late Thursday with possible additional precipitation. Overnight lows throughout the week will sit between 9°C and 12°C, with Monday's high reaching just 15°C.
