A person using the alias Mr. Singh has served approximately 15,000 home-cooked meals on the streets of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside over the past two months, working alone except for one full-time employee and refusing to accept donations.
Mr. Singh's stated long-term goal is to provide one million meals to people in need. "I've always asked myself one question: are they just supposed to die on these streets? Like what solutions do we have for this?" he said in an interview. "We just don't serve food. We ask them, how you doing? How's your day been? Are you okay? We try to show love, because they need that more than anything."
Mr. Singh has turned down over $100,000 in donations, insisting on paying for everything himself. "I've turned down over $100,000 just in donation, right? Because this is something I want to do with my own money. That was my goal from the get-go. And I'm going to keep that," he said.
He has grown a following online but does not want to be recognized. "When I take off my mask, I want to go back to my normal life. Just being a nobody. That's it," Mr. Singh said. "we're all gonna die one day. It's always good to leave a legacy behind."
Mr. Singh's identity and background have not been independently verified, and the exact methodology for his meal count is unclear.
