Metro Vancouver's stretch of sunny World Cup weather is ending, with rain returning Friday and showers likely through Canada Day on July 1.

Environment Canada meteorologist Matt Loney said an upper disturbance has spawned a surface low-pressure system affecting much of coastal B.C., bringing 10 to 20 millimetres of rainfall depending on location.

"We'll probably see anywhere from 10 to 20 millimetres of fall, depending on location. And then beyond that, things look unstable," Loney explained.

Saturday's forecast includes improving conditions through the day, with some clearer skies emerging by evening. Monday is shaping up to be the best day of the week, sitting between two low-pressure systems and offering a reprieve from unsettled weather.

"We'll have this unstable air mass continue to linger. But there is a kind of a break on Monday, which looks like possibly the best day as the first upper trough lifts," Loney said.

However, another disturbance is slipping down the coast in time for midweek. "We've got another [disturbance] that's slipping down the coast in time for midweek. So definitely kind of a repeat of what we just saw, [but] maybe not as quite as intense," he noted.

"The shower chances are going to be certainly in play as we get towards midweek and especially Canada Day." In true Vancouver style, locals may want to embrace the wet weather—or pack an umbrella for Canada Day celebrations.
