Vancouver Opera's biggest free summer event is back—and the company just gave its conductor a reason to stick around.
On July 19, thousands of people will spread blankets across Deer Lake Park for Opera in the Park, the annual outdoor concert that's quietly become one of Metro Vancouver's best-attended cultural events. This year, the timing coincides with news that Jacques Lacombe has been reappointed as Music Director for another three years.
Last summer, more than 7,500 people showed up. That's not because there's a ticket price or a marketing blitz—it's because the event actually delivers: world-class opera in an outdoor setting where seasoned fans and first-timers sit equally welcome.
This year's program pulls highlights from the 2026–27 season, including selections from Tosca, The Barber of Seville, and La Traviata. The concert kicks off with VOICES RISING 2026, a free pre-show featuring performances by Tzo'kam and Sarabande alongside members of the Vancouver Opera Chorus.
Lacombe's reappointment keeps the artistic direction steady. General Director Tom Wright noted that the conductor has built strong relationships with singers, musicians, and the broader creative team. In the upcoming season, Lacombe will conduct both Tosca (the opening production) and La Traviata (the finale), with Jonathan Darlington continuing as Music Director Emeritus.
What makes Opera in the Park actually work is simple: it strips away the intimidation factor. No dress code. No expensive tickets. Just music performed by accomplished musicians, under the sky.
