Save-On-Foods detected a breach in its More Rewards database on Tuesday and notified affected customers Friday night of the intrusion. Hackers accessed names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and dates of birth belonging to thousands of customers.
The company said passwords, credit card data, and transaction history were not accessed. Save-On-Foods shut down the affected server the day of detection and launched an investigation with a third-party cybersecurity expert, which it said "quickly contained" the incident.
Save-On-Foods is notifying appropriate authorities and privacy regulators. The company warned customers it will never contact them requesting verification codes, banking information, payment card numbers, Social Insurance Numbers, or security question answers. Customers should verify any unexpected requests using contact information known to be legitimate, not information provided in the request itself.
The company did not disclose the total number of affected customers or the full scope of the breach. More Rewards serves customers across Save-On-Foods and its parent company Pattison Food Group's other banners: Buy-Low Foods, Choices Markets, Nature's Fare Markets, Nesters Market, and Urban Fare.
