A fire at the Hazelwood Hotel SRO on East Hastings Street between Gore Avenue and Dunlevy Avenue displaced 12 people on Sunday but caused no injuries.
The Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says the fire broke out on the second floor around 2:20 p.m. Sprinklers were activated and the fire extended to the exterior, spreading to the third and fourth floors. There is heavy fire damage to the unit where the fire originated and considerable water damage to other units.
Assistant Chief Arnie Groenewegen said the fire "appears accidental in nature." 34 firefighters and eight trucks were dispatched to the scene. East Hastings Street was closed in both directions but has since reopened as investigators determine the cause. A fire truck remained on scene and delays were reported on East Cordova Street.
