Surrey police have charged two men in connection with an extortion-related shooting on June 11 at a home in the City Centre neighbourhood near 96 Avenue and 133A Street.
Arman Singh, 21, and Simarjeet Singh, 22, both foreign nationals, face one count each of reckless discharge of a firearm. Officers responded shortly after 5:30 a.m. to reports of shots fired. The residence was occupied at the time, but no injuries were reported.
Police arrested four foreign nationals total during search warrants executed June 12 at two residences, with assistance from the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team and Canada Border Services Agency. The two additional men arrested have not been charged and remain in the custody of border authorities.
Investigators determined the incident stemmed from an extortion dispute. Both charged men remain in custody with a court date set for June 29. Surrey police released their photographs and are asking the public for information about their activities and potential criminal networks.
As of June 18, there have been 128 reported extortions and 20 related shots-fired incidents in Surrey this year, with most occurring in January. Police say shootings have slowed significantly since then, with only one or two per month.
