A female tourist was pushed from behind into traffic near Carrall and East Pender streets Friday just after 2 p.m., and a man was stabbed multiple times near Main and Hastings streets Sunday around 11:40 p.m. Both incidents were stranger attacks, and both suspects fled before police arrived. The tourist was not injured; the stabbing victim's injuries were non-life-threatening.
Vancouver Police are asking for help identifying the suspects and say video footage could be critical. The woman is described as Indigenous, 40–50 years old, 5'8", medium build with sunken cheeks and lip piercings. She was wearing a black toque, black jacket, black pants, and black combat boots. The man is described as Caucasian, 30–40 years old, approximately 6 feet tall with a stocky build and bald head. He was wearing an orange shirt and tan pants.
Constable Darren Wong, with VPD's statement team, noted that witnesses in the Downtown Eastside are often reluctant to come forward. "Each incident this weekend occurred in an area where limited video surveillance was available," Wong said. "Video footage can help identify suspects and protect victims when witnesses are too afraid to speak up."
Police are appealing for dash-cam footage from motorists in the area and any video surveillance from nearby businesses. Both cases remain under investigation. Anyone with information can contact the VPD non-emergency line at 604-717-3321.
