The Vancouver Bandits snapped a two-game losing streak on Tuesday, July 7, defeating Saskatoon Mamba 92-85 in their opening road contest.
Tevin Brown led the way with a season-high 28 points in just his fourth game as a Bandit. "When my teammates find me with their passes, I've got to be ready to knock the shot down," Brown said.
Both teams had a slow start, with Saskatoon leading 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Bandits took control in the second quarter, holding a 49-42 lead at halftime. Mamba slowly chipped away, tying the game at 64 by the end of the third. Vancouver outscored Saskatoon 28-21 in the fourth to secure the win. Jarkel Joiner hit a corner three that proved crucial late, finishing with 14 points and four assists.
Interim head coach Ransford Brempong said the team's pace was key to the victory. "We played a lot faster tonight and that's the identity that we want," he said.
The Bandits were without several key players for this trip. Miller Kopp is competing in the NBA Summer League with the Houston Rockets, and reigning Canadian Elite Basketball League MVP Mitch Creek is playing for Australia during the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers. Vancouver's next road game is against Calgary Surge on Thursday, July 9, at 6:30 p.m.
