British Columbia's police watchdog is investigating after Vancouver police fatally shot a person during a home invasion response in East Vancouver late Monday.

Police were called to the 3600 block of Commercial Street around 9 p.m. after reports of a violent home invasion where a suspect was holding a man hostage. Despite de-escalation attempts, the suspect was shot and killed. The hostage was taken to hospital with injuries and has since been released. No officers were injured.

The Independent Investigations Office, which probes deaths or serious harm potentially caused by police action, was called in. The watchdog's involvement is standard in fatal police shootings.

The incident marks another high-profile case for the city's police service, coming amid ongoing scrutiny of use-of-force policies.
