Jean-Marie Zeitouni finds his Edmonton favourite in Bistro Praha's Czech comfort

Jean-Marie Zeitouni, newly appointed music director of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, has found a quiet refuge at Bistro Praha — a spot that's become central to his life here.

"It has become a special post-concert spot for many of us in the orchestra, and there is something wonderful about continuing conversations there after a performance," Zeitouni said of the Czech-focused restaurant with European classic dishes.

Zeitouni's relationship with Edmonton runs deep. He has been music director at the symphony since February 2025, following an international search. His connection to the band stretches back 20 years through guest conductor appearances, where he earned a reputation among musicians and audiences alike.

Beyond the restaurant, Zeitouni is equally drawn to the city's musical spaces. The Winspear Centre, where the orchestra performs, tops his list of favourite things about Edmonton.

"The acoustics are among the best I've encountered anywhere, and there is a real sense of connection between the audience and musicians in the hall," he said.

Bistro Praha's appeal lies in its approachability — a place where the intensity of a rehearsal or performance can ease into conversation over European food. For Zeitouni and his orchestra colleagues, it's become the natural gathering place when work winds down, a measure of how deeply the restaurant has woven itself into the city's arts community.
