Alberta's police watchdog is investigating a fatal shooting involving Edmonton Police Service officers after a 57-year-old man advanced toward officers with scissors during a weapons complaint response.
Edmonton police responded to the hotel near Stony Plain Road and 178 Street on Monday, after reports that two men were inside a hotel room and one was in possession of a firearm. Police contained the area and attempted to establish communication with the men.
During those efforts, a man exited the hotel room and moved toward officers with a pair of scissors. Two officers discharged their firearms in response. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS. No EPS officers or other emergency personnel were injured.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is conducting the investigation. EPS submitted a notification to the CEO of the Police Review Commission, which directed ASIRT to investigate. The EPS cannot provide additional information while the investigation is underway. Media inquiries are being directed to ASIRT.
