ASIRT releases details of August west-end police shooting that killed 57-year-old

Alberta's police watchdog released details Friday of a fatal shooting at the Hilton Garden Inn on Stony Plain near 178 Street on August 24.
Edmonton police arrived around 7:30 p.m. after reports of a man with a gun on the premises. Staff and guests reported a man on the second floor acting erratically and holding scissors. The 57-year-old man repeatedly asked officers to kill him.
Officers engaged with him for about half an hour. The man ignored repeated requests to drop the scissors. Police used a conducted energy weapon and less-lethal rounds to try to incapacitate him, but neither succeeded. The man dropped the scissors, then picked them up again and advanced toward officers. Two officers shot him just after 8 p.m.
Officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived. The man died at the scene. Guests had been told to shelter in place during the engagement.
Edmonton police confirmed on August 25 that details were forwarded to the CEO of the Police Review Commission. ASIRT said the investigation is still in early stages and provided no further comment. The names and identities of the officers involved have not been released.
