A 57-year-old man was shot and killed by Edmonton Police at the Hilton Garden Inn on Stony Plain Road on August 24 after officers responded to a report of a man with a gun acting erratically.
Police were called after 7 p.m. Officers found the man on the second floor holding scissors. A 30-minute negotiation followed. The man allegedly told police to kill him. During the exchange, police deployed a taser and other non-lethal weapons. The man dropped the scissors but then picked them up again and advanced toward officers.
Two officers fired, and the man died at the scene. Hotel guests were told to shelter in place. Officers attempted to revive the man, according to other reporting. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the provincial police watchdog, was called to investigate the officers' use of force. The investigation is ongoing.
