Edmonton Police Service made an arrest in a West Edmonton Mall jewellery store robbery earlier this month, crediting forensic evidence for cracking the case quickly.

On May 5, a man entered a jewellery store inside WEM, tried on merchandise, then discharged pepper spray and fled with items in hand. The robbery triggered a forensic investigation that would prove decisive.

Officers collected fingerprints from the scene and matched them to a suspect already known to police. The suspect was arrested following the identification. Police have indicated the suspect may also be connected to additional incidents, and the investigation continues.

The case underscores how even small physical evidence—a fingerprint left in the chaos of a quick robbery—can quickly identify a suspect. WEM, as one of the city's busiest retail hubs, occasionally experiences retail theft, but the speed of this arrest reflects good police work and cooperation between frontline officers and forensics.
