Grandparent Scam Suspect Posed as EPS Officer, Stole Nearly $5K

Calgary police seek man who impersonated Edmonton detective in March con that targeted an elderly woman.

A suspect who dressed up as an Edmonton police detective and conned an elderly woman out of nearly $5,000 is now wanted by Calgary police.

The incident happened March 23 when a man called a woman in the 100-200 block of Tuscany Ride Close NW. He claimed to be her grandson and said he was in jail in Edmonton, needing bail money immediately.

Panicked, the victim withdrew $4,900 from her bank and called the number the suspect provided. The suspect then arrived at her home, collected the cash, and identified himself as an Edmonton police officer. She handed over the money, and he vanished.

This is a classic "grandparent scam" with a twist: the suspect added an impersonation layer by claiming police credentials. The tactic plays on two psychological vulnerabilities—family urgency and authority deference. Victims are less likely to question someone who presents as law enforcement, especially when they're already panicked about a family member in trouble.

Edmonton police have issued a warning about the scam's variants. The lesson for seniors and their families: hang up on unexpected calls claiming emergencies, verify claims by calling family members directly at known numbers, and remember that real police will never demand payment from citizens. If you or someone you know has been targeted by similar scams, report it to local police.
