A man died Friday morning after a shooting at Alberta Pipe Trades College parking lot near 160 Street and 118 Avenue in northwest Edmonton, prompting a major police response and lockdown of the facility.

The shooting occurred at approximately 8:20 a.m. in the parking lot serving Alberta Pipe Trades College and the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 488. Officers arrived within minutes to find the man with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Edmonton Police homicide detectives took over the investigation around 1:30 p.m.

Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots. One student said she heard five to six shots while getting coffee from her vehicle. Another student said he initially thought the sounds were explosions until classmates told him someone was shooting at the school. The college locked down all classrooms and kept students from retrieving vehicles in the secured area, later providing buses to transport them elsewhere. Rod McKay, business manager of Local 488, said the buildings remained under lockdown as a precaution and the organization was cooperating fully with police.

A second police scene emerged in Parkland County near Highway 16 at Range Road 20, west of Stony Plain. Police have not disclosed what led them to that location or what they are investigating there. Edmonton Police and Alberta RCMP are working to determine whether the county scene is connected to the college shooting.

Police are continuing their investigation. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain undetermined. Anyone with information is urged to contact Edmonton Police or Crime Stoppers.
