Investigators are piecing together what led to a shooting on Monday, June 22, in Montreal that left multiple people dead. One piece of the picture comes from Lethbridge, Alta., where the accused shooter, Seth Scott Hatfield, lived.

Anika Medema, a neighbour of Hatfield's in a townhouse complex on Lemoyne Crescent, said she barely knew him. "He wasn't very approachable. Kept to himself, really," she said.

Police descended on the complex Tuesday morning in a high-risk search, with officers occupying the area for hours. Medema had left early that morning but returned to a scene transformed by police presence.

"There were police everywhere," she said.

The University of Lethbridge confirmed Hatfield was a student there. The university extended condolences to those affected and condemned the violence.

Medema, who also attends the university, reflected on the randomness of proximity. "You never know who you walk past," she said. "You don't really know your neighbour that well, so anything could be happening."
