Ontario expanding Oshawa GO station with two new tracks to boost Lakeshore East service

Ontario is expanding the Durham College Oshawa GO station by adding two new tracks, new pedestrian bridges, a new north platform with a canopy and snow-melting system, an extended south platform, and a reconfigured bus loop.
Construction is underway as part of the province's plan to support two-way, all-day GO train service on the Lakeshore East line. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the expansion will increase capacity, improve accessibility, and help reduce pressure on Highway 401. "These upgrades will increase capacity, improve accessibility and make it easier for thousands of commuters to get where they need to go," Sarkaria said Wednesday.
The government has not disclosed a completion date or a specific budget for the Oshawa expansion. Sarkaria said those figures will be released once the procurement process is completed. The government is spending over $15 billion on various GO expansion projects overall.
The expansion runs alongside the Bowmanville GO extension, which will extend the Lakeshore East line nearly 19 kilometers further into Durham Region. That extension is expected to finish by 2041 and support 4.9 million trips annually. Multiple street closures are already in place for related work: Simcoe Street between Avenue and Albany streets is fully closed until approximately January 2028; Wilson Road S. is closed from Dieppe Avenue to Bloor Street E. until late spring 2027 for Highway 401 widening; and Cubert Street and Park Road S. have closures until fall 2027.
Durham Regional Chair John Henry said the Oshawa expansion has been "a long time coming" and is necessary to support growth in the region. Sarkaria acknowledged that tariffs are impacting project costs across Ontario but emphasized the importance of investing in public transit infrastructure and supporting domestic supply chains.
